I’ve always loved floral designs in tiles: Iran, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, … distant images glimpsed in books or museums.
One day in India, I visited a mausoleum abandoned by all and in very poor condition that dazzled me.
It sits on the banks of the same river as the Taj Mahal, which is certainly one of the most visited monuments in the world,
but no one seems interested in this small ruined building. And yet, despite its decay, it bursts with joyful candor.
It is entirely covered with stylized representations of plants, each one housed in a graceful niche. And this exquisite composition is made…
I want to say in zelliges, although the Arabic word seems inappropriate in this place.
Yet it is indeed the same technique brought to India during the reign of the Mughals and since forgotten.
This graceful monument immediately sent me back to work on the side of my dreams, and Moroccan artisans followed me.

The “Calligraphique” frieze is called “excised.”
This work consists of scraping the enamel off a zellige.
Despite its highly codified nature, it remains a form of writing,
and variations exist depending on the artisan who creates it, including in the decoration,
so no two will ever be truly alike.
It can be ordered in any colour from our zellige range.

The traditional size of the “Bejmat” is 5 x 15 cm, 2.5 cm thick.
It is used for floors.
The sides can also be glazed to form an angle,
because, unlike other zelliges, it is not recut after firing.

We also produce them in a thickness of 1.2 cm for use on walls.
